DESCRIPTION:
Saint Edward the Confessor was born to King Ethelred II in Ipslip, England in the year 1003. Though he died in 1066 AD, his remains were transferred to his final resting place on October 13, 1163 AD. This day has been his feast day ever since.
Why so many feast days in the Catholic and Orthodox churches? Feast days were granted by The Church to allow peasants and others to take a day off. As most worked 6 days a week, feast days provided a break that landowners and nobility couldn't deny. Today, the average American gets 104 weekend days and 6 national holidays off work a year.
In medieval times, there were approximately 60 feast days a year. Add this to 52 Sundays, Christmas and Easter, and that equals at least 114 days off a year, four more days than most Americans, today, are afforded each year.
